ANNE OF GREEN GABLES - CAVENDISH, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

As a child I adored the Anne of Green Gables series.  Written by Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1908, she wrote of a simple, gentle life spent in her Cavendish home.   She loved her home, the beautiful rolling hillsides surrounding it and the blue St Lawrence Gulf close by.   Old trees spread their branches over this historic site, gardens lend beauty to it and peace and tranquility pervade it.   The house has been passed down through the generations and is the present day home of John and Lucy Macneill who have carefully restored the site.
We were glad to arrive at the very beginning of the summer season well before the millions of tourists.  In fact many restaurants and attractions were not open.   Sandstone cliffs and windswept beaches are the rich island red, which contrast perfectly with emerald green pastures and rolling potato fields.

The homestead fields of potatoes give you a sense of the source of the inspiration for her writing.
