The Henry Family

On his maternal side, Hugh’s grandfather was a Scottish Engineer and Surveyor from Edinburgh.   Hugh was named for him - Hugh McCrone Connal.     Connal arrived in Rarotonga via Tahiti. Subsequently he married an island girl,  Tapu Atua, from the southern island of Mangaia.
On Hugh’s paternal side, his Cook Islands Grandfather, Tiavare Henry, had been trained as a School Teacher by the missionaries in Aitutaki.   He later became Resident Agent of the northern coral atoll of Manihiki.

Hugh’s Father, Albert, was educated at St Stephens College, a private school for boys, in New Zealand. He returned to teach in Rarotonga, and did so for many years. In the early 1940s he took his small family to New Zealand, for better opportunities and education.    Hugh was the youngest of four siblings, and only four years old, when the family moved to New Zealand.
